The Modular Smart Gun System was a proposal developed in response to the Brooklyn Borough President’s Smart Gun Design Challenge in 2017 and was a selected finalist.
As a direct witness to the effects of gun violence, I felt a responsibility to work towards a solution to it through the context of product design. My goal was to advance the cause of reducing gun violence by creating a product that could exist between the two polarized sides of the debate, placing a marker for voices in between and opening a space for more nuanced dialogue.
In rising to the challenge put forth by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, extensive research on existing technologies was carried out which ultimately revealed that the issue with smart guns was not technological, but cultural. With that, I set about learning more about the nuances of gun culture in order to create a product that would ultimately be adopted.
